[Illustration] Polyvinyl alcohol: National conditions determine the production process

Analysis of the development of the world polyvinyl alcohol industry

First, the world's polyvinyl alcohol production capacity is growing steadily

In recent years, the world's polyvinyl alcohol production capacity has increased steadily. In 2016, the world's total polyvinyl alcohol production capacity was 2.08 million tons.

Second, the production of polyvinyl alcohol in our country is developing steadily

The production of polyvinyl alcohol in our country has developed steadily. Especially with the implementation of the national strategy of vigorously supporting the western region, the northwest and southwest regions have become hot spots for polyvinyl alcohol manufacturers to invest. Sichuan, Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and other regions rely on their unique conditions to vigorously develop calcium carbide and its downstream industrial chain and become a concentrated growth area for polyvinyl alcohol production capacity.

III. Development Trend: National Conditions Determine Production Processes

In the future, the production technology of polyvinyl alcohol in the world will still be mainly ethylene and acetylene, among which foreign production enterprises will still be mainly ethylene, and acetylene process will still occupy a dominant position in the Chinese mainland.

But overall, the development trend of the polyvinyl alcohol industry in the future is to develop high-precision products with high degree of polymerization (high viscosity) and high alcoholysis on the one hand, which have good performance in the fields of high-grade adhesives, high-strength and high-modulus fibers, and cement reinforcements; on the other hand, in the fields of water-soluble adhesives, water-soluble fibers, polymerization aids, medical, electronics, etc., which are mainly used with special requirements, to develop in the direction of high-value-added products with low degree of polymerization, partial alcoholysis or low alcoholysis.

Items Capacity
Inner Mongolia Wuhai Haixin Environmental Protection Materials Technology Co., Ltd. 90,000 ton capacity expansion project
Inner Mongolia Century Hengrun Chemical Co., Ltd. 200,000 tons of new construction
Xinjiang Nangang Investment Co., Ltd. 100,000 tons of new construction
Anhui Wanwei Group Co., Ltd. New 100,000 ton project in Chaohu, Anhui
Xinjiang Qingsong Weilun Chemical Co., Ltd. New 150,000-ton project in Industrial Park No. 2, Aral City, Xinjiang
Ningxia Baota United Chemical Co., Ltd. New 100,000 ton project
Ningxia Dadi Chemical Co., Ltd. phase three 100,000 tonne energy project

Most of these plants are currently in the planning or planning stage. There are not many projects that can be implemented as planned. In addition to the current shutdown of production and shutdown devices, it is expected that by 2020, the total production capacity of polyvinyl alcohol in our country will remain at about 1.60 million~ 1.70 million tons, and the western region will still be the main supply area of polyvinyl alcohol in our country.

At present, polyvinyl alcohol products in our country are mainly conventional products, while high-viscosity high-alcoholysis products with high added value, low-viscosity low-alcoholysis products are mainly dependent on imports, which determines that polyvinyl alcohol production enterprises must take the road of differentiation and high-end new product development and production in order to improve efficiency, and gradually open up the international market has become the inevitable development of enterprises.

In terms of consumption structure, with the continuous development of non-fiber uses of polyvinyl alcohol, the consumption of polyvinyl alcohol for vinylon fibers in our country will continue to decrease, while the proportion of non-fiber usage is increasing.

As production capacity continues to increase, while consumption growth is lower than capacity growth, industry competition becomes more intense, and some smaller production facilities with relatively outdated and outdated equipment will be shut down or discontinued.

At present, polyvinyl alcohol in our country is generally produced by calcium carbide-acetylene method. Although this process route has high energy consumption, high pollution and high cost, it is in line with our country's national conditions and will continue to exist in a certain period of time.
